Ice cream cones and their history
The history of ice cream itself is not clear. The first mentions of its existence come from China about 5000 years ago. The idea to eat it in a wafer cone was born in 1904 during a fair held to celebrate the anniversary of The Louisiana Purchase. The high temperatures deeply bothered the event’s participants, and that is why they eagerly used the ice cream vendor’s services. One of them, Arnold Fornachou, ran out of containers in which he used to serve his desserts rather quickly. The neighbouring booth was run by Ernest Hamwi, who sold… wafers. Now, there are two versions of this tale. One says that Arnold borrowed a wafer sheet from his neighbour and folded it himself. The other talks about how Hamwi himself came up with the idea. No matter how it actually came to be, the partnership was so successful that it sparked the beginning of a new product – wafer cones.
What are ice cream cones made of?
Wafer cones are made with the most basic of ingredients, such as water, flour, vegetable oils, baking soda, and salt. These ingredients are mixed and then poured into a batter container found near the wafer baking machine. Depending on the wafer kind and recipe used, additional ingredients like sugar, milk, whey, soy proteins, butter flavouring, or vanilla sugar may be added.
